The correct way to bed-in your Carbon Ceramic brake discs
Unlike with conventional iron brakes, carbon ceramic brakes require a transfer of material from the brake pad to the brake disc to work properly. This is why only Pagid RSC1 and RS29 brake pads are recommended for use with Sturm Bock Carbon Ceramic brake kits.
When you first receive your Sturm Bock Carbon Ceramic brake kit, it is essential that you bed in the brake discs correctly to allow optimal performance and lifetime durability.
Only carry out the following procedure where it is safe and legal to do so.
Step 1: Gentle Stops (to bed the pad and disc geometry)
20 normal stops from 30 mph (50 kph) to a complete stop with light pedal pressure.
Step 2: Medium Stops (to increase the pad temperature above 400°C to condition the pad)
20 medium stops from 75 mph (120 kph) to 25 mph (40 kph) at about 0.4-0.5 g.
Step 3: Heavier Stops (to fade the pad and outgas)
10 heavier stops from 77 mph (125 kph) to 25 mph (40kph)
Aim to do 4 stops per minute.
Step 4: Controlled cool down (to control the cool down of the brake)
Cool the brake to below 100°C by driving at around 50 mph (80 kph) without braking for around 15 minutes.
This suggested bedding procedure should ensure correct interaction of the braking couple (pad and disc) and give optimal performance of your carbon ceramic brakes as well as preventing damage to the disc through inefficient braking.
